What is Base anyway?

As the name suggests, Base is the base fluid for liquids in e-cigarettes. It doesn't matter whether the liquid is already ready-made on the shelf or you mix it yourself - the components of the base contained in it are the same. They consist of only two ingredients, which some may still remember from chemistry class: glycerin and propylene glycol.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a syrup-like liquid, which is also colorless and odorless and has a viscous consistency. As a base fluid in e-liquids, it is very beneficial because it makes the vapor denser and the overall smoking sensation smoother. In addition, glycerin gives the liquid a sweetish note, which contributes to the taste formation, and due to its viscous consistency, the liquid evaporates more slowly. Glycerin also helps to prevent mouth and throat from drying out when vaping because it attracts moisture. The amount of VG in the liquid mainly affects the density of the vapor produced and how smooth your vaping experience is.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is a colorless and odorless solvent that is known in chemistry primarily for its outstanding ability to transport flavors and provides a slightly scratchy feeling in the throat. The amount of PG in your liquid thus determines the intensity of the flavor and how scratchy the smoking sensation is when vaping.

What is the difference between 50/50 and 70/30?

The numbers 50/50 and 70/30 represent the ratio of Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) in the liquid. As you know, PG and VG provide different vaping properties to the liquid. Therefore, the choice of the base depends heavily on your individual needs and preferences and whether you are an experienced vaper or a beginner, and what device you have. 

When does 50/50 base make the most sense?

These bases have a 1:1 mixing ratio, meaning they contain 50% glycerin and 50% propylene glycol. Due to the specific properties of VG and PG, which you can read about again above, this base offers you, depending on your preferences, some advantages over 70/30 base:

• 50/50 base offers you a balanced ratio between vapor production and throat hit while vaping.
• The throat hit is similar to that of traditional cigarettes.
• The base is suitable for almost all devices, especially for beginner devices such as pod systems.

50/50 base is therefore particularly suitable for those who are just starting to vape or using a beginner-friendly device like a pod system. Also, vapers who prefer a scratchy feeling when vaping or people who have just quit smoking and want a cigarette-like smoking sensation often opt for 50/50 base due to the cigarette-like smoke feeling. However, if you prefer a soft vaping experience and large vapor clouds, we recommend you to buy 70/30 base.

What are the benefits of "DIY liquid"?

Making liquid for your e-cigarette yourself is really practical and advantageous in many ways compared to buying the small mini-bottles regularly. Starting with the cost aspect, because by mixing your own liquids, you will save a lot of money in the long run. This is due in part, of course, to the fact that a production step is eliminated for the manufacturer through mixing, and on the other hand, that the individual components you need are usually sold in relatively large quantities and are therefore much cheaper when broken down. Another advantageous aspect, and in our opinion the most important one: you have full decision-making power! There is no chocolate-kiwi flavor? No problem, just mix chocolate and kiwi together! Do you want to try a nicotine strength of 14.25mg, or even none at all, or just for fun, throw 50mg (which we do not recommend!! Do not do this!) of nicotine salt into your liquid? Just do it! All of this is made possible by mixing it yourself. You can adjust the nicotine strength, flavor combinations, the density of the vapor, and even the scratchy feeling in your throat completely to your wishes and needs! The control over the ratio of ingredients gives you a creative leeway that you will never want to miss again!

Mixing your own E-liquid: For beginners or as a reference

Contrary to the expectations of many vapers, mixing your own liquid for an e-cigarette is not at all difficult and only takes a few minutes. Although it may seem like alchemy to the uninitiated, all you really need is base, flavoring, and, if desired, nicotine shots. We also recommend wearing disposable gloves, using a small mixing bottle, a small pipette, and a (waterproof) surface to work on. Now you calculate the ratios of the individual components. To do this, you should first consider how much liquid you want to mix, how much flavoring you want to use, and your desired nicotine strength in mg. Common flavoring dosages are 3% or 6%, and for nicotine strengths it's 3mg, 6mg, 9mg, 10mg, 12mg, 18mg, and 20mg. It is recommended to start with a lower nicotine strength and then adjust it upward until you find the perfect amount for you.

Formulas

You can easily calculate your respective ratios with these formulas in the following order:

• Nicotine shot proportion: Final liquid amount in ml / Nicotine shot strength in mg * Desired nicotine strength = Nicotine shot proportion in ml

• Flavoring proportion: Final liquid amount in ml / 100 * Flavoring proportion in % = Flavoring proportion in ml

• Base in ml: Final liquid amount in ml - Flavoring proportion in ml - Nicotine shot proportion in ml = Base proportion in ml

Example

You want to create 100ml of liquid with 6% flavoring and 9mg nicotine strength. Your nicotine shots have a strength of 20mg/ml:

• Nicotine shot proportion: 100ml / 20 * 9 = 45ml

• Flavoring proportion: 100ml / 100 * 6 = 6 ml

• Base proportion: 100ml - 45 - 6 = 49 ml

From here, everything is very simple: You mix base and nicotine shots together in the bottle, then add the flavoring with the help of the pipette. Close the bottle, shake well - done!

NOTE:

The liquid will taste strongest after approximately 2 days of steeping time.
