Charcoal grids
Charcoal guard grids limit the area around the glowing charcoal and can hold back falling pieces. Wind covers additionally shield the head. Look at the design: some grids rest on the charcoal plate, covers sit around the HMD.

Where does the grid sit?
A tall guard grid stands on the charcoal plate around head and attachment. A plate grid lies directly on the plate. Mesh covers and wind covers are built for a specific fit; dimensions and fit are stated on the respective model.
Height and diameter must also be sufficient with a molasses catcher, chimney or a tall head. You should still be able to reach the charcoal comfortably with the tongs.
A wind cover changes the heat
A closed cover keeps more heat at the head than an open grid. Keep this in mind when readjusting. Grids and covers get hot; set the hookah up securely and put loose charcoal on a heat-resistant rest.
