What is an electric hookah head?
An electric hookah head heats your tobacco with a heating element instead of glowing charcoal. A battery supplies the power, and you set the temperature on the device or via an app. Your hookah stays as it is: you keep using the base, water, stem and hose. All that goes is lighting, turning and topping up the charcoal, and with it the charcoal ash.
Electric head or E-HMD: what's the difference?
The terms aren't used consistently in the trade. A classic HMD spreads the charcoal's heat over the tobacco head. An E-HMD does the same electrically, with no charcoal at all. Some devices go a step further and also replace the clay head: the tobacco then sits in its own chamber inside the device, and the device sits directly on the head adapter. That's how the ShishaX VOLTA works, for example. What matters for you: with every device in this category, you smoke regular shisha tobacco on your own hookah.
What to look out for when choosing
- Heating: one heat zone or two separately adjustable ones, temperature in degrees or in steps.
- Battery: runtime per charge, swappable battery and whether it runs on the cable (pass-through).
- Fit: which grommets are included and whether the device suits the size of your hookah.
- Chamber: material, tobacco amount, and whether spare chambers or pods are available.
- Controls: buttons and display on the device, app as an extra.
- Cleaning and running costs: what can get wet and which consumables you'll buy again.
Our devices at a glance
The ShishaX VOLTA replaces the clay head and the charcoal. It heats via two separately adjustable zones from above and from the side, holds about 10 g of tobacco and runs on a swappable battery with 5000 mAh, or on the USB-C cable if you like. The app is optional. XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite are available from us in several colours. The XKAH Pro works with its own tobacco pods and a battery pack that's charged via USB-C.

No charcoal, but still tobacco
Electric heads are not liquid e-hookahs. They heat real shisha tobacco on your hookah; no liquid goes in. Frequently asked questions about electric hookah heads
What is an E-HMD?
An E-HMD is an electric attachment that replaces the charcoal on a hookah. It heats the tobacco with a heating element and a battery. Some devices also replace the clay head.
Do I need special tobacco?
No. Electric heads and E-HMDs work with regular shisha tobacco. On the ShishaX VOLTA it's about 10 g per fill, loosely filled in.
Will electric heads fit my hookah?
On most hookahs, yes. The devices are fitted onto the head adapter with silicone grommets. On the ShishaX VOLTA, grommets in 18 mm and 16 mm are included. On very small hookahs, it's best to check the size beforehand.
How long does the battery last?
It depends on the device and the temperature. On the ShishaX VOLTA, one charge lasts around 1 to 1.5 hours. With a second battery or on the USB-C cable, you can go longer.
Can I use charcoal or a regular HMD as well?
No. An electric head or an E-HMD is the heat source itself. Charcoal, foil or an extra HMD are not added.
How does it differ from a liquid e-hookah?
A liquid e-hookah is technically an electronic vaporiser and heats liquid. Electric heads heat shisha tobacco on your hookah. More on this in the guide Hookah Without Charcoal.
