Yes, hookah works without charcoal: an electric bowl or an e-HMD heats your normal hookah tobacco with electricity. Tobacco amount, preheating time and temperature depend on the specific device. Lighting, topping up and ash are no longer needed. Four different types of device run under “hookah without charcoal”, though.
Yes. On a hookah, the charcoal is only the heat source. It heats the tobacco in the bowl so that smoke forms, which you draw through water and hose. An electric heating element can supply that heat just as well. Glass base, water, stem and hose stay the same, and with electric bowls and refillable pods so does your usual hookah tobacco.
What matters is which kind of “hookah without charcoal” you are looking for. Not every device advertised like this works with tobacco at all.

A complete device is a whole hookah in one product: glass base, stem, heater and battery belong together. The OOKA works with prefilled capsules from the manufacturer. It is ready to smoke after five minutes, and one capsule lasts around 70 minutes. In return, you buy every filling as a capsule and only smoke the flavours that exist as a capsule.
The shii is likewise a complete electric hookah, but takes your own tobacco. You fill 10 to 12 grams into a stainless steel pod and set the temperature on the rotary ring. Your existing hookah stays in the cupboard with both complete devices.
These devices go onto your existing hookah. You plug them with a silicone adapter onto the bowl adapter of the stem, and they replace bowl, foil or HMD and the charcoal. The ShishaX VOLTA is an electric bowl with a ceramic chamber. XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite are called e-HMD or Smokebox in the trade, and their tobacco sits in a refillable metal pod. Your own tobacco goes into all three. You can find the selection under electric hookah bowls & e-HMDs.
The fourth group has nothing to do with hookah tobacco. E-liquid e-hookahs, whether as a disposable device, as a pen or as an attachment with a tank, are technically e-cigarettes: a heating coil vaporises an e-liquid. Anyone searching for “e-hookah” often ends up with these products. They are no substitute for hookah tobacco.
| Type | Your hookah | What is heated | What you rebuy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete device with capsules | is replaced | prefilled capsules | capsules |
| Complete device with pod | is replaced | your hookah tobacco | tobacco, rarely a pod |
| Electric bowl, e-HMD | stays, the device goes on top | your hookah tobacco | tobacco, screens, rarely chamber or pod |
| E-liquid e-hookah | is not needed | e-liquid | e-liquid, pods or coils |

At its core, an electric bowl is a heated tobacco chamber with control and battery. We show what that looks like in detail using the ShishaX VOLTA as an example.
The tobacco sits in a ceramic chamber between two metal screens. Heating comes from two directions: from above via the lid with radiant heat, similar to a charcoal, and from the side via the chamber wall with contact heat. You set both zones separately. Devices with only one heating zone are simpler in design but leave you less room for adjusting.
An electric bowl also needs a start-up phase. On the ShishaX VOLTA, preheating takes approx. 8 minutes, and you can skip it if you wish. You use the time to prepare glass base, water and hose.
Instead of estimating the heat via the amount and position of charcoal, you set a temperature in degrees, and the device holds it. In addition there is a session duration after which the bowl switches off. On the ShishaX VOLTA you extend it with a double tap in 10-minute steps, up to 150 minutes at most.
The power comes from a battery. On the ShishaX VOLTA it is swappable, has 5,000 mAh and lasts around 1 to 1.5 hours per charge, depending on temperature. Via USB-C pass-through the device also keeps running on the charging cable. With a second battery you simply swap instead of waiting.

Normal hookah tobacco goes into an electric bowl. The pod of the XKAH Pro and Lite takes 8 to 10 grams, the chamber of the VOLTA about 10 grams, the pod of the shii 10 to 12 grams. That is less than in a Phunnel. Fill loosely and do not press anything down. More tobacco does not bring more smoke; it just sits too close to the heating surface and burns.

Light Virginia tobacco is the easier entry; it forgives a few degrees too much or too little. Dark Blend needs more heat. The degree figures apply per device:
| Device | Light Virginia tobacco | Dark Blend |
|---|---|---|
| ShishaX VOLTA | 180 to 220 °C, start at 200 °C in both zones | 200 to 240 °C |
| XKAH Pro | 240 to 260 °C | 260 to 300 °C |
| shii | lower levels from 265 °C | 280 to 290 °C |
From there you continue in small steps. If it tastes bitter or burnt, turn it down. If the smoke is thin, turn it up. For steam stones and tobacco-free mixtures, the XKAH Pro has its own non-tobacco mode.
These points decide whether a device suits your hookah and your evenings.
Does the device heat only from above or also from the side? Can you set the temperature in degrees or only choose levels? And can you see what is currently happening during the session? Two separately controllable zones give you more control, and a clear display makes adjusting easier.
Three questions matter: How long does a charge last at your usual temperature? Can the battery be swapped? Does the device keep running on the cable? The XKAH Pro manages about two hours on one charge, while the XKAH Lite is tied to the cable and needs a socket within reach. For long sessions, a swappable battery and pass-through help. Also pay attention to which USB-C power adapter charges the device quickly.
An electric bowl is usually placed onto the bowl adapter of the stem with a silicone seal. Check which seals are included. On the ShishaX VOLTA they are 18 mm and 16 mm; choose the seal that sits firmly on your bowl adapter. Also think about size and weight: on very small hookahs, an electric bowl quickly becomes top-heavy.
What is the tobacco chamber made of, how much tobacco fits in, and can you rebuy spare chambers or pods? A second chamber is practical: you prepare it while the first is still being smoked.
An app can bring presets, remote start and live values. It should be optional, though, so that the device also works fully without a phone. Check whether an account is needed, how the iPhone is connected and which Wi-Fi the device needs. The ShishaX VOLTA can also be operated on the device without an app.
Electric bowls are electronics. Read beforehand which parts may get wet and which may not. For the ShishaX VOLTA the rule is: never rinse the device and never put it in the dishwasher, whereas screens can be rinsed and reused. On the XKAH Pro the lower part is dishwasher safe and you rinse out the pods. Wipe heating plate and contact pins dry after cooling down.
Charcoal, foil and lighter are no longer needed. Instead you need screens, now and then a new chamber or new pods, and at some point a spare battery. Check whether these parts are available individually and what they cost. For the VOLTA, battery, ceramic pods and screens are among the spare parts. Before buying a device, check which spare parts are currently available.
Manufacturer guarantees are often tied to registration. ShishaX, for example, gives 1 year on the device and 6 months on the battery if you register the VOLTA in the manufacturer portal. Your statutory warranty rights against the retailer apply regardless of this.

An electric bowl or an e-HMD costs a one-off amount similar to a good hookah. After that you pay for electricity and, now and then, spare parts: screens, a pod or a chamber, a seal, later a second battery. The electricity hardly matters. The battery of the XKAH Pro lasts for about two sessions, which is hardly worth mentioning per session.
With charcoal you use two to three cubes of natural coconut charcoal per bowl. That is only a small cost per session, plus the electricity for the charcoal lighter. The saved charcoal alone only pays off the device price after many sessions. The tobacco matters more: 8 to 12 grams go into a pod or chamber, 15 to 20 grams into a normal bowl.
With a complete device with capsules it is the other way round. There, each session costs one capsule, and that is more expensive than charcoal and tobacco for one bowl together.
You can calculate with your own figures in the article Is an e-HMD worth it?. The device prices are in the category Electric bowls & HMDs.
An electric bowl holds the temperature across the whole session. The smoke therefore stays equally dense from the first to the last puff; the dip of a burning-down charcoal does not occur. Fruity light flavours taste almost like with charcoal, just without a charcoal note when kick-starting. With strong Dark Blend you notice the difference more, because the radiant heat of the charcoal works differently on the tobacco. Expect about 90 per cent of a really good charcoal session.
You are not faster. Eight minutes of preheating equals the time natural charcoal needs on the lighter; full smoke comes on the XKAH Pro after around a quarter of an hour. The gain lies elsewhere: no lighter, no embers, no topping up, no ash on the plate. Complete devices with capsules smoke thinner than a hookah with a bowl.
Without charcoal, the embers as a source of carbon monoxide are gone. Nicotine and smoke from the tobacco remain, and you still need to ventilate.
In routine, the comparison looks like this:
| Point | Charcoal with foil | Charcoal with HMD | Electric bowl |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighting | pre-glow the charcoal | pre-glow the charcoal | not needed, preheating on the device |
| During the session | turn charcoal, top up, tap off ash | top up charcoal, regulate airflow | device holds the temperature, adjust by button or app |
| Temperature control | by feel | via lid or slider, by feel | adjustable in degrees |
| Ash | yes | yes, in the HMD | no charcoal ash |
| Consumables | charcoal, foil | charcoal | screens, chambers or pods, electricity |
| After the session | let embers cool, dispose of ash | let embers cool, dispose of ash | let the device cool, empty the chamber |

Using the ShishaX VOLTA as an example. On other devices, buttons and seals differ, but the process is similar.
Before the first use: unscrew the base cap, remove the insulating foil between battery and device, insert the battery and screw the cap on firmly. Then charge fully via USB-C.
Fill the glass base so far that the dip tube stands just in the water.
Place the lower screen in the ceramic chamber and fill in about 10 grams of tobacco loosely.

Put the upper screen on and wipe the chamber rim clean. Then you place the chamber in the heating chamber and screw the lid on firmly without overtightening it.

Put the silicone seal into the base cap, usually 18 mm, or 16 mm if the fit is loose. Press the device onto the bowl adapter. As a test, cover the top and draw: resistance means sealed.

Switch on, choose the session duration and set the upper and the side zone. 200 °C in both zones suits as a start.
Double-tap the power button and wait about eight minutes. If it tastes burnt at the top, lower the upper zone. If it gets too hot at the edge, lower the side one. A double tap extends the session by ten minutes.

Switch off and let the device cool down for at least 30 minutes. Remove the chamber only with the tweezers. Dispose of tobacco residue, rinse or replace screens.
On the XKAH Pro it is shorter: take the screen out of the pod, fill in 8 to 10 grams of tobacco loosely, let the screen click back in and insert the pod. Then you plug the device straight onto the bowl adapter with the matching silicone adapter and start Classic mode.
The table compares the design of XKAH, ShishaX, shii and OOKA. It also shows devices that cannot currently be ordered.
| Device | Design | Tobacco per fill | Power | Suited for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XKAH Pro | E-HMD with refillable pod | 8 to 10 g | Swappable battery, about 2 hours | Balcony, garden, on the go |
| XKAH Lite | E-HMD with refillable pod | 8 to 10 g | Mains cable | fixed place at home |
| ShishaX VOLTA | Electric bowl with ceramic chamber | approx. 10 g | Swappable battery, 1 to 1.5 hours, keeps running on the USB-C cable | regulating two heating zones individually |
| shii | Complete device with refillable pod | 10 to 12 g | Swappable battery, up to 2 hours | anyone who does not have a hookah yet |
| OOKA | Complete device with capsules | Capsule | Battery, up to 3 hours | anyone who does not want to build anything |
Electric bowl that replaces clay bowl and charcoal: ceramic chamber for approx. 10 g of normal tobacco, two separately controllable heating zones, swappable battery with 5,000 mAh, USB-C pass-through, colour display and an optional app. Battery, ceramic pods, screens and several bundles are also available. Our ShishaX brand page explains how the system is built.
The XKAH Pro is an e-HMD with refillable pods for your own tobacco and a swappable battery with 13,600 mAh, charged via USB-C. In Classic mode it preheats for eight minutes and then runs for 50 minutes; in Custom mode you choose temperature and duration yourself. The XKAH Lite uses the same pods, runs on the mains cable and has a rotary dial instead of a display. We stock XKAH Pro and XKAH Lite in several colours, plus spare pods and a spare battery for the XKAH Pro. Everything about the brand is on the XKAH brand page.
The shii is a complete electric hookah with XKAH heating technology: bottle, heating unit, swappable battery, hose and mouthpiece form one device. The tobacco goes into a stainless steel pod, and you set the temperature on the rotary ring between 265 and 315 °C. The article shii: the electric hookah explains the build, tobacco amount and battery.
OOKA is widespread as a complete device with capsules. There are also other electric bowls from various manufacturers. If you do not have a hookah yet, take a complete device such as the shii. If your hookah stands at a fixed place with a socket, the XKAH Lite is enough. For balcony, garden and on the go you need a battery, so XKAH Pro or VOLTA. All devices we stock are in the category Electric bowls & HMDs.
Anyone who wants to smoke entirely without charcoal takes an electric hookah bowl or an e-HMD for their own hookah, or a complete device such as the shii or OOKA. Anyone who only wants to use the charcoal better reaches for an HMD but then still needs charcoal.
That depends on the use. Without a hookah of your own, you take a complete device such as the shii. For a fixed place at home, the XKAH Lite on the cable is enough. For balcony and on the go you need a battery, so XKAH Pro or ShishaX VOLTA.
An e-liquid e-hookah is technically an e-cigarette: it heats an e-liquid and needs no hookah. An electric hookah bowl sits on your hookah and heats real hookah tobacco.
Yes, normal hookah tobacco works. The pod of the XKAH Pro takes 8 to 10 grams, the chamber of the ShishaX VOLTA about 10 grams, filled loosely in each case.
That depends on the device and the temperature. On the XKAH Pro one charge lasts about two hours, on the ShishaX VOLTA around 1 to 1.5 hours. With pass-through or a second battery it goes on longer.
If the device supports pass-through, yes. The ShishaX VOLTA keeps running on the USB-C cable as long as the battery is inserted.
The seal must sit firmly on your bowl adapter. The connection runs via silicone seals. On the ShishaX VOLTA, seals in 18 mm and 16 mm are included. With very small or unusual hookahs, it is worth checking the dimensions.
OOKA is a complete device: its own electric hookah that works with prefilled capsules from the manufacturer. An electric bowl such as the ShishaX VOLTA, by contrast, goes onto your existing hookah and uses your own tobacco.
