Light natural charcoal on a charcoal lighter designed for the purpose, in an open outdoor area. Turn it with the tongs and wait until every side has glowed through. Black patches still need more heat. An open window does not turn an indoor room into a suitable place for lighting.
The living room in the picture is an unsuitable location – even with a stone slab under the device. Choose an open outdoor area with some distance from windows, doors and flammable objects. A conservatory, a garage and an enclosed balcony are unsuitable.
The surface must be level, stable and non-flammable. Run electrical devices only when dry and according to their instructions; rain and wet connections rule out operation. Never leave the lighter or the embers unattended. Keep children and pets away.

Check the device
Check the cable, plug and rest on the device while it is switched off and cold. A damaged lighter stays off. Have charcoal tongs and a suitable metal container ready.
Place the charcoal
Spread dry charcoal pieces on the intended rest. Follow the device instructions for the fill quantity and the switch-on sequence. Do not put anything on the switches or the cable, and do not stack the charcoal.
Turn with the tongs
Turn the charcoal as soon as the undersides glow. Use the tongs, keep your distance from the heating coil and the housing, and let every side get heat.
Check all round
Check the charcoal from every side. Black surfaces or edges still need more heat. Orange to red embers and a grey film of ash show the progress; the clock alone does not decide.
Switch off and move
Switch the lighter off and disconnect it from the power supply according to its instructions. Use the tongs to move the charcoal into the intended metal container. The device and the container stay on their heat-resistant surface until they have cooled down.
Several minutes are normal. The time depends on the device, the size of the charcoal and the conditions at the location. For electric lighters, about five to ten minutes is a guideline, not a fixed rule. What matters is checking every side.
| Heat source | What matters? | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Electric charcoal lighter | Use the intended rest and turn the charcoal | Dry, outdoors and according to the device instructions |
| Gas charcoal lighter | Only with the intended rest and a matching cartridge | Only in an open outdoor area; follow the instructions |
| Kitchen cooker | Not a suitable alternative for this guide | Do not put charcoal on a glass-ceramic hob, an induction hob or a kitchen gas burner |
| Lighter | Unsuitable for natural coconut charcoal | Self-lighting charcoal is a different type of charcoal |
Do not use any accelerants. You can find accessories under charcoal lighters and charcoal tongs.
Carbon monoxide, or CO for short, is produced as soon as you light the charcoal. You can neither see nor smell this toxic gas. Charcoal that has glowed through also releases CO. An open window and a CO detector do not remove this danger indoors. Light charcoal outdoors and do not let residual embers cool down indoors either.
If a CO alarm sounds or you suspect poisoning: leave the building with the others who are present and call 112 from outside. Headaches, dizziness or nausea can be warning signs. Do not put yourself in danger when trying to help, and do not go back to fetch devices or charcoal.
The following indoor pictures explicitly show unsuitable locations. The scenes do not replace the device instructions or a real check that the charcoal has glowed through.
Store cold natural charcoal dry and protected from moisture. A tightly closing tin keeps the cubes together; the packaging helps to identify them clearly. This applies only to unused charcoal that is completely cold. Embers and warm remains never belong on a shelf or in a storage jar.
The matching type of charcoal is shown on the packaging. Natural charcoal and self-lighting charcoal are not interchangeable when lighting. You can find the selection under hookah charcoal.

Pick up charcoal with suitable charcoal tongs, never with your fingers. Keep the handle area away from the embers. A charcoal basket serves as the intended rest and for short transport; it does not make hot charcoal safe.
For cooling down, use a suitable fireproof metal container outdoors on a non-flammable surface, away from anything flammable. Even remains that look grey can still smoulder. Only completely cold ash goes into the general waste, in line with local disposal rules; neither warm remains nor embers belong in a bag or a bin. Never pour water over an electric lighter.
The number and position of the charcoal pieces depend on the bowl and the top. For that, there are the articles Building a hookah bowl and HMD and heat management. This one is about charcoal, lighter and tongs – without blanket charcoal quantities for every setup.
No. Natural coconut charcoal needs the sustained heat of a lighter designed for the purpose. Self-lighting charcoal is a different type of charcoal.
No. Even fully glowing charcoal releases carbon monoxide. The visible embers tell you nothing about the CO concentration in the room air.
Use a suitable open outdoor area with some distance from windows and doors. An open window is not a clearance to operate it indoors.
Leave the building with the others who are present and dial 112 from outside. Do not go back to fetch charcoal or devices, and do not put yourself in danger when trying to help.
