For moist Virginia tobacco and the HMD, you use a Phunnel: the hole sits raised in the centre and the molasses stays in the bowl. You smoke Dark Blend and Burley the classic way in a multi-hole bowl with foil. In the hookah scene, “clay bowl” usually means exactly this multi-hole bowl made of unglazed clay.
The design determines where the smoke leaves the bowl and where the molasses runs. From that follows which tobacco and which attachment suit it.
| Design | How it is built | Suits | Attachment | Molasses catcher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phunnel | One hole, raised in the centre | Moist Virginia, also Dark Blend | HMD or chimney | Not needed |
| Multi-hole bowl | Several holes in the flat base | Dark Blend and Burley | Foil, with a wide well also HMD | Sensible with moist tobacco |
| Vortex | Raised centre, holes at the side | Moist tobacco under foil | Foil or HMD | Not needed |
If you smoke light, juicy tobacco, start with the Phunnel. If you smoke Dark Blend with foil, the multi-hole bowl is the classic.
With the Phunnel, the base has no hole. The smoke passes through a single, raised hole in the centre, and the tobacco sits around it as a ring. The molasses stays in the well instead of the stem, which is why it also tolerates very moist tobacco.
It is the bowl for the HMD. Foil works too, but if it hangs too low over the hole, it restricts the draw. Examples are the Chess Tradi Phunnel made of unglazed stoneware and the D-Phunnel by Darkside for Dark Blend. Models can be found under Hookain Phunnel.

With the multi-hole bowl, several holes sit in the flat base and the tobacco sits directly above them. This gives a direct draw and plenty of heat, which suits Dark Blend and Burley. The classic clay bowl is a multi-hole bowl made of unglazed clay, such as the Diamond Hookah clay bowl.
Moist tobacco drips through the holes, and a molasses catcher keeps it out of the stem. Foil usually goes on top. With a wide, shallow well, as with the 5evilla Bowl or the Darkside D-Killer, an HMD fits too. Models can be found under Hookain multi-hole bowls.

The Vortex combines both designs. Like the Phunnel, it has a raised centre, but the smoke passes through several holes set into its side. The molasses stays in the well, and the foil is not sucked into the holes when you draw. The draw therefore stays even.
The material determines how much heat the bowl stores and how it can be cleaned. Hookah bowls are almost always made of clay or stoneware, raw or glazed on the inside.

| Material | Heat | In everyday use |
|---|---|---|
| Clay, unglazed | Stores heat well and releases it evenly | Absorbs molasses, needs thorough cleaning |
| Stoneware, unglazed | Stores heat similarly to clay | Porous, absorbs molasses; how much depends on firing and model |
| Glazed | Like the material underneath | Easy to clean, absorbs significantly less; dark patches are rare but possible |
| Silicone | Stores little heat | Almost unbreakable, easy to care for |
| Glass | Hardly stores any heat | Flavour-neutral, fragile |
Hookain bowls are made of stoneware, many of them thrown by hand on the potter's wheel in Spain. Some are glazed, while ranges such as the 5evilla Bowl or the Chess Tradi stay raw. How to get both variants clean is shown in the article Cleaning your hookah properly.
Small bowls hold 8 to 12 grams of tobacco, medium ones 15 to 18, large ones 20 to 25. How much actually fits also depends on the tobacco and the build: some Dark Blends such as Blackburn you pack loosely, others you press down lightly. Follow the recommendation for your brand and your bowl. The shallow Low Load holds about 8 grams of Virginia, the deep Drip Bowl 22 to 24 grams. A small bowl is enough for you alone; for a group, take one from 15 grams. The values for each Hookain range are in the article Packing a hookah bowl properly.
A Phunnel takes an HMD or a chimney attachment. Both rest on the rim, and the charcoal keeps its distance from the tobacco. On the multi-hole bowl, you stretch foil. An HMD only fits if the rim is wide enough for the attachment. The HMDs in the Hookain range measure 7.3 to 7.5 centimetres at the bottom.
The chimney attachment is an open attachment with a screen on which the charcoal sits. It replaces the foil and fits Phunnel and clay bowl, for example the Diamond Hookah chimney attachment. Which HMD you choose is explained in the article HMD and Smokebox. Whether a bowl suits your hookah and your attachment is shown by the Bowl Finder.
If you want to complete your setup, you can state in the hookah advisor for accessories whether you already have a bowl and HMD. In addition, you check the fit of bowl and attachment on the product pages.
Neither is better in principle. The Phunnel suits moist Virginia and the HMD, the multi-hole bowl suits Dark Blend and Burley with foil.
This is what the scene usually calls the classic multi-hole bowl made of unglazed clay. It stores a lot of heat and is usually smoked with foil.
Yes. With an HMD, Dark Blend also works in a Phunnel, and Darkside builds the D-Phunnel specifically for this.
No. The molasses stays in the well around the raised hole. You mainly need a molasses catcher with a multi-hole bowl and moist tobacco.
If the well is wide and shallow, yes. With narrow, deep clay bowls, you use foil or a chimney attachment.
Unglazed clay stores heat evenly but absorbs molasses. A glazed bowl is easier to clean and absorbs less. Ceramics are never completely sealed, though: even glazed bowls can develop dark patches over time, which the scene calls bleeding.
