In Germany, a vape counts as electronic waste and never belongs in household waste or the yellow bag (Gelber Sack, the German collection bag for packaging). Since 1 July 2026, every shop that sells e-cigarettes takes old devices back for free, even if you don't buy anything new. Tape both poles of loose batteries and put them in the battery collection box.
Almost every vape has a lithium-ion battery, plus a circuit board, coil, metal and plastic. Legally it counts as an electrical device, which is what the crossed-out wheelie bin on the device or packaging shows.
If a vape ends up in household waste or the yellow bag, the battery gets crushed in the bin lorry or at the sorting plant and can catch fire. In German waste and sorting plants, fires break out more than 10,000 times a year, and around 80 percent of them are caused by lithium batteries.
Whether it's a disposable vape, a Big Puff or a pod system, you hand in the device as a whole, at a shop or at a recycling centre (Wertstoffhof, the municipal drop-off site). Only what comes off without tools gets separated beforehand.
| Part | Where | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable vape, Big Puff | Any shop that sells e-cigarettes, or recycling centre | Hand in whole, don't break it open |
| Pod system with built-in battery | Shop or recycling centre | Pull off the pod and hand it in too |
| Box mod | Shop or recycling centre | Battery out, unscrew the tank |
| Loose battery, e.g. 18650 or 21700 | Retail battery box or recycling centre | Tape both poles |
| Damaged or swollen battery | Recycling centre, hazardous-waste collection van or retail collection point | Tape the poles, carry it in a closed container, don't post it |
| Empty pod, coil, tank | Hand in at the shop together with the device | Pods and coils count as part of the device |
| Leftover liquid with nicotine | Recycling centre or hazardous-waste collection van | Never down the sink or toilet |
| Empty liquid bottle | Yellow bag; glass bottle into the glass container | Soak up the last drops with kitchen paper, paper into general waste |
| Carton and leaflet | Waste paper | Nothing else |
Five quick steps before the vape goes into the collection box. The most important one is taping the poles of loose batteries.

A box mod like the Geekvape Aegis Solo 3 runs on a replaceable battery. Unscrew the tank, open the battery cover and take out the cell. You hand in the mod at a shop, and the taped cell goes into the battery box. If the battery is still good, keep using it. Replacements like the SC 18650 battery are in Batteries.

Since 1 July 2026, every point of sale for e-cigarettes or heated tobacco devices in Germany takes old devices back, from vape shops to kiosks and petrol stations, whatever their size. Free of charge and without buying anything new. You can recognise them by the standard collection point logo at the entrance. Any battery box in a supermarket takes loose batteries, and the recycling centre takes everything together.
You can post us old batteries and we refund the postage, see Batteries and waste electrical equipment. For old devices, write to us via the contact form. Never put damaged batteries in a parcel.

Not yet. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider announced a law in May 2026 that is meant to ban disposable vapes. Refillable devices wouldn't be affected. Nothing has been passed so far. What is already settled is the EU Battery Regulation: from 18 February 2027, batteries in newly sold devices must be removable and replaceable by the user. Vapes with a glued-in battery will then no longer be allowed onto the market as new products.
With a disposable vape or a Big Puff like the RandM Tornado 7000, the whole device, battery included, goes into the collection box after the last puff. With a pod system, you charge the battery via USB-C and only swap the pod or coil. The Innocigs eGo Pod and the Vaporesso ECO Nano 2 have 1000 mAh and run on replacement pods. How to find the right device is covered in the article Buying a pod system, and whether to go prefilled or refillable in the article Prefilled or refillable.
Yes. In Germany, electric heated tobacco devices such as IQOS or glo are electrical devices and fall under the same take-back obligation as e-cigarettes. Used tobacco sticks aren't electronic waste; once cooled down, they go into general waste.
No. It has a lithium battery and is electronic waste. Hand it in whole at a shop that sells e-cigarettes, or at the recycling centre.
Yes. Since 1 July 2026, every point of sale for e-cigarettes and heated tobacco devices in Germany takes old devices back for free, with no new purchase and no matter how big the shop is.
Yes, batteries by post, and we refund the postage. The address and process are on the page Batteries and waste electrical equipment. Damaged or swollen batteries don't belong in a parcel.
Stop charging it, don't use it, don't squeeze it. Tape the poles, store it in a closed container somewhere cool and dry, and take it to the recycling centre as soon as possible.
Pods and coils count as part of the device. Hand them in together with the device at a shop or at the recycling centre.
Leftovers containing nicotine belong at the recycling centre or the hazardous-waste collection van, never down the sink or toilet. Soak up the last drops with kitchen paper; the empty plastic bottle goes into the yellow bag.
