The origin Spain tells you where a bowl was made – not how it is built. What counts for your choice is therefore the design, the material and the rim.
What to look for in a bowl
- Design: A phunnel has a single hole on a raised central cone, so molasses stays in the reservoir. A multi-hole bowl has several holes in its base, through which molasses can run into the stem.
- Material: Earthenware and stoneware are often confused. Earthenware has a porous body and needs a glaze; stoneware is densely sintered and watertight even when unglazed.
- Rim: An HMD or chimney attachment rests on the lip of the bowl. For the attachment to sit level, the lip should be flat and wide enough.
- Care: A clay bowl without glaze draws liquid into its pores. To boil it clean, lower a clay bowl gently into boiling water instead of dropping it in.
The shop stocks bowls of Spanish origin from brands including Hookain and N!CE.
