The Symphony by Alpaca is a flat phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware with a bridge over the centre hole, handmade in the USA and built for aluminium foil. It is around 10 cm tall, a good 6.5 cm wide at the top and holds around 10 g of Virginia tobacco or 15 g of Dark Leaf.
Bridge: the crosspiece over the centre hole
Typical of the Symphony is the bridge, a ceramic crosspiece across the spire. With a normal phunnel, the foil is pulled down during strong draws and can close off the centre hole, and then the draw collapses. The bridge keeps the foil above the hole up, so the draw stays free.
Phunnel with a flat, wide reservoir
In the centre sits a raised spire with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir around it. This keeps the molasses in the bowl so it does not run into the stem. The reservoir is flat and wide, so you get by with comparatively little tobacco.
Built for aluminium foil
The rim has no standard size, and the bridge is designed for foil. The Symphony is therefore smoked with aluminium foil; an HMD is not intended for it.
Handmade in the USA
Alpaca makes its bowls by hand in the USA from dense stoneware and glazes them afterwards. The glaze gives each colourway its colour. Because every piece is made by hand, size and colour gradient vary slightly from bowl to bowl.
How to pack the Symphony
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the spire and do not press it down. Spire and bridge stay free.
- Fill to just below the rim so the foil does not touch the tobacco.
- Stretch heavy-duty foil or multi-layer aluminium foil tight over the rim and pierce many small holes only above the tobacco, not above the spire.
- Place the coals at the rim, heat up for a few minutes and control the heat through the position of the coals. Too much charcoal at once burns the tobacco.

Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits into the Symphony?
Around 10 g of Virginia tobacco or 15 g of Dark Leaf. The exact amount depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.
What is the bridge good for?
It prevents the foil from being pulled into the centre hole when you draw. The draw stays even, even if you pierce slightly fewer holes.
Can I smoke the Symphony with an HMD?
The rim is a special size, so a standard HMD does not sit securely. The bowl is designed for aluminium foil.
Do the colourways differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and bridge are the same for all colourways. Because every bowl is handmade, each piece looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the hookah, rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic does not tolerate a cold shock; otherwise the glaze can crack.
