Description

The Lavart Nedra is a flat multi-hole bowl made of glazed ceramic from the Ukrainian brand Lavart. It is about 7 cm tall, has five slightly raised holes in the reservoir and holds about 21 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of dark leaf.

Five holes on small elevations

Five holes sit in the bottom of the reservoir. Each hole stands on a small, glazed collar and thus lies slightly higher than the bottom. This way molasses does not run directly into the stem as quickly as with holes that lie flat in the bottom. The Nedra does not keep the molasses in the bowl as reliably as a Phunnel, though. You therefore pack it loosely and not too wet, like any multi-hole bowl.

Flat reservoir

The reservoir is only a good 1 cm deep, and the tobacco lies in a thin layer above the holes. Therefore do not pack above the rim, and give the bowl some time when lighting it instead of putting on a lot of coal right away.

HMD or aluminum foil

The rim has the standard size, and common HMDs sit on it. If you smoke classically, stretch aluminum foil and leave a few millimeters of air above the tobacco. More bowls from the Ukrainian manufactory can be found at Lavart.

Cast and hand-glazed

The Nedra is cast from ceramic in Ukraine. As a result, shape and dimensions are the same on all models. Finishing and glazing are done by hand, which is why every piece looks slightly different in its color gradient. The glaze of the Aqua model: black with blue and dark blue.

How to pack the Nedra

  1. Briefly mix and loosen the tobacco in the tin. Let very wet tobacco drain briefly.
  2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir and do not press it down. The five holes must not be clogged.
  3. With an HMD fill to just below the rim, with aluminum foil a little less so that 2 to 5 mm of air remains.
  4. Put on the HMD or stretch the foil tight, poke many small holes and re-tighten.
  5. Light it with two to three fully glowing coals and regulate the heat via the number and position of the coals. Add more if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much tobacco fits in the Nedra?

About 21 g of Virginia tobacco or 24 g of dark leaf. The exact amount depends on the cut, the moisture and how loosely you pack.

Is the Nedra a Phunnel?

No. The Nedra is a multi-hole bowl with five holes. The holes sit only slightly raised, and a chimney with a center hole like on the Phunnel is missing.

Does my HMD fit the Nedra?

Yes, the rim has the standard size. Common HMDs sit on it.

Do the models differ?

Only in color and glaze. Shape, reservoir and holes are the same on all models.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only when the bowl has cooled down completely do you rinse it with lukewarm water and clear the holes. Hot ceramic does not tolerate a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
