The Baba Bowl from Hookain is a large Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for long sessions in a group. It is around 17 cm tall, a good 14 cm wide and holds around 100 g of Virginia tobacco or 155 g of dark leaf.
In the BBC finish the Baba Bowl is completely black: the reservoir, chimney and double rim are glossy, while the shaft is matt and carries an embossed, irregular texture. You can find the same large bowl in other glazes under Baba Bowl.
Large bowl for long sessions in a group
A typical bowl holds 10 to 30 g of tobacco, the Baba Bowl a multiple of that. The reservoir is around 12 cm wide and a good 3 cm deep. That makes it meant for evenings when many people smoke together and nobody wants to keep topping up. For everyday use on your own it is too big.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies around it in the wide reservoir. That way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the heat spreads over the tobacco from above.
Built for aluminium foil
The rim is much larger than on normal bowls, so a standard HMD does not fit. The Baba Bowl is smoked with aluminium foil. You spread the charcoals around the rim over the tobacco and keep pushing them along over the course of the session.
Handmade in Spain
Every Baba Bowl is made by hand from stoneware in Spain and glazed. The glaze gives each model its colour, and because each piece is made by hand, every bowl is one of a kind. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing on the hookah. The bowl is heavy, so the hookah should stand firmly and the bowl should sit tight.
How to pack the Baba Bowl
- Briefly mix the tobacco in its tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays clear.
- Fill to just below the rim, so that the foil does not touch the tobacco.
- Stretch wide, strong aluminium foil tightly over the rim, poke lots of small holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney, and then re-tighten so that the foil is not pulled into the centre hole.
- Spread the charcoals around the rim, take your time getting it going and regulate the heat via the number and position of the charcoals. Too much charcoal at once burns the tobacco.

Does an HMD fit the Baba Bowl?
No, a standard HMD is too small for the wide rim. You smoke the Baba Bowl with aluminium foil.
Do the models differ?
In colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same on all models. Because every bowl is made by hand, each piece looks a little different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze may crack.
Why does molasses leak out on the outside?
Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses can soak in and come back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented entirely.
