The Lil Lip Vintage Splash is the small Phunnel by Hookain made of stoneware, brown with colourful splashes. It is only 39 mm tall and, depending on how you pack it, holds 12 to 16 g of tobacco, about as much as the larger Lit Lip.
On Vintage Splash, splashes in red, orange, white and black sit on a matt brown background. The pattern looks like blobs of paint on old leather and is distributed differently on every bowl. You can find all glazes of the series under Lil Lip.
Flat Phunnel with a full reservoir
In the middle there is a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco sits in a ring around it. This keeps the molasses in the reservoir and stops it running into the smoke column. Because the bowl is so flat, the HMD sits low over the tobacco, and after getting it going the bowl needs little readjusting.
Rim for Kaloud and NaGrani
The rim measures 72 mm on the inside and 75 mm on the outside, and the lip is 3 mm thick and ground. Tops such as Kaloud Lotus or NaGrani sit flat and finish flush with the bowl. You can find more tops under HMDs and chimney tops. The Lil Lip works just the same with aluminium foil.
How to pack the Lil Lip
- Briefly loosen the tobacco and sprinkle it loosely into the ring around the chimney, without pressing it down.
- Fill to just below the rim, and the centre hole stays free.
- Put the HMD on, get it going with two to three charcoals for a few minutes and then readjust using the vents.
Frequently asked questions
How much tobacco fits in the Lil Lip?
Depending on the cut and how loosely you pack, 12 to 16 g, towards the upper end with Dark Leaf.
Does the Lil Lip have a rubber ring?
No. Hookain supplies it without a rubber ring, and this has no effect on heat or flavour.
Will my bowl look exactly like in the photo?
Not quite. The glaze flows during firing, and the gradient and depth of colour turn out slightly different on every bowl.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Ceramic has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses is drawn in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. This is called bleeding, and it lessens over time. Fine hairlines in the glaze are caused by the heating and do not change anything about how it works.
How do I clean the bowl?
Let it cool down completely first, then rinse it out with lukewarm water and go over it with a soft brush. Hot ceramic can crack under cold water.

Ideal
I have the Lil Lip in the Colorway Yegörmeista and I'm very happy with it, it feels pretty robust and very high-quality. In my opinion it works especially well on a smaller hookah.
