The Lit Lip from Hookain is a Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. It holds around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf and works with an HMD just as well as with aluminium foil.
Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring
In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the reservoir all around it. This way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the tobacco gets the heat from the HMD evenly from above.
Two types of clay, glaze and a roughened lip
The bowl is made and glazed in Spain from two matched types of clay. The glaze of the Candy shows beige, grey, pink, blue and light blue. On the smooth glaze, molasses and tobacco residue rinse off easily. The lip at the top stays roughened so that the HMD sits firmly and does not slip.
Fits common HMDs and aluminium foil
The rim has the standard size for chimney attachments. From the Kaloud Lotus to the inexpensive HMD without a brand name, common HMDs and chimney attachments sit on the Lit Lip. If you prefer to smoke with aluminium foil, you stretch it directly over the rim.
How to pack the Lit Lip
- Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
- Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays free.
- Fill only to just below the lip so that the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
- Put the HMD on, get it going with two to three pieces of charcoal for a few minutes and regulate the heat using the vent.

How much tobacco fits in the Lit Lip?
Around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of dark leaf. Exactly how much it turns out to be depends on how loosely you pack.
Can I smoke the Lit Lip with aluminium foil?
Yes. Stretch the foil taut over the rim and pierce the holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney in the middle.
Do the colours differ?
Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and rim are the same in all colours. Because the glaze flows during firing, each bowl looks slightly different.
How do I clean the bowl?
Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze can crack.
Why does molasses come out on the outside?
Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses is drawn in and comes out again on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
