Lit Lip - Phunnel - Vintage Splash

The Lit Lip by Hookain is a Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. It holds around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of Dark Leaf and works with an HMD as well as with aluminum foil. The Vintage Splash is handmade and shows red and white splashes on a black glaze.

Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in the ring

In the middle of the Lit Lip sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies in the well around it. This keeps molasses from running into the smoke column, and the tobacco gets the heat from the HMD evenly from above.

Two types of clay, glaze and a roughened lip

The bowl is made in Spain from two matched types of clay and glazed. On the smooth glaze, molasses and tobacco residue rinse off easily. The lip on top stays roughened so the HMD sits firmly and does not slip. The glaze of the Vintage Splash is black and glossy, with red and white splashes. In a few spots the dark clay stays visible, unglazed.

Fits common HMDs and aluminum foil

The rim has the standard size for chimney toppers. From the Kaloud Lotus to the inexpensive no-name HMD, common HMDs and chimney toppers sit on the Lit Lip. If you prefer smoking with aluminum foil, stretch it directly over the rim.

How to pack the Lit Lip

1. Briefly mix the tobacco in the tin so the molasses is evenly distributed.
2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the well around the chimney and do not press it down. The center hole stays free.
3. Fill only up to just below the lip so the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
4. Put the HMD on, heat it with two to three coals for a few minutes and regulate the heat with the vents.

Frequently asked questions

How much tobacco fits in the Lit Lip?

Around 12 g of Virginia tobacco or 16 g of Dark Leaf. The exact amount depends on how loosely you pack.

Can I smoke the Lit Lip with aluminum foil?

Yes. Stretch the foil tightly over the rim and poke the holes only above the tobacco, not above the chimney in the middle.

Do the colors differ?

Only in color and glaze. Shape, well and rim are the same for all colors. Because the glaze flows during firing, every bowl looks slightly different.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl has cooled down completely on the shisha, rinse it with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, and the glaze may crack otherwise.

Why does molasses come out on the outside?

Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses soaks in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented completely.
