Hookah tobacco types: Virginia, Dark Blend and Dark Leaf explained
By Julian, Hookah expert
With hookah tobacco there are two camps: light Virginia and dark tobacco on a Burley base, which the scene calls Dark Blend. Virginia has little taste of its own and mainly carries the aroma. Dark Blend tastes stronger of tobacco and has significantly more nicotine. Dark Leaf is the strongest level.
The tobacco type tells you which base tobacco is in the tin. It is not a flavour direction: the same grape flavour tastes fruity and light on Virginia, darker and spicier on Burley.
Tobacco types in hookah tobacco compared
Tobacco type
Base tobacco
How it smokes
Virginia
Light Virginia, usually washed
Slightly sweet, little tobacco taste, the aroma comes first
Dark Blend
Burley, often blended with Virginia
Strong, earthy and spicy, a noticeable kick
Dark Leaf
Pure Burley, unwashed
The strongest level, plenty of tobacco taste
Orient and Dark Air Cured appear in hookah tobacco only as an admixture. In the shop, you can find the tobacco type for every tobacco under the Base tobacco property.
What is Virginia tobacco?
Virginia is the light base tobacco on which many hookah tobaccos are built. It is usually washed several times. As a result it becomes light, loses its own taste and nicotine, and absorbs a lot of molasses.
In the bowl you therefore taste almost nothing but the aroma. Virginia forgives small mistakes in bowl packing and heat and is the tobacco for getting started. All light tobaccos are listed under Virginia tobacco.
What is Dark Blend?
Dark Blend is dark hookah tobacco on a Burley base. The name says it all: it is a blend. Usually some Virginia is added to the Burley, sometimes Orient or Dark Air Cured as well. Many people simply call it black tobacco.
Burley tastes earthy, spicy and slightly nutty. With Dark Blend you always have this tobacco taste beneath the aroma. Then there is the kick, because dark tobacco has significantly more nicotine than Virginia. The selection is under Dark Blend.
What distinguishes Dark Leaf from Dark Blend?
Dark Leaf consists only of Burley and stays unwashed. So it lacks the Virginia share that tones a Dark Blend down. Dark Leaf is therefore the most intense tobacco type, in taste as well as in nicotine.
Some shops and manufacturers use both terms interchangeably. So do not look only at the name, but at the base tobacco and the strength indication on the product.
What do washed and unwashed mean?
In washing, the raw tobacco is rinsed with water. This draws nicotine and own taste out of the leaf. The more often it is washed, the lighter and more neutral the tobacco becomes.
Dark tobacco is usually not washed. It keeps its colour, its tobacco taste and its nicotine. The reverse does not hold, though: you cannot reliably infer strength from colour alone. How this looks for a single line is shown in the article on Darkside CORE.
How strong is dark tobacco?
Significantly stronger than Virginia. Hardly any manufacturer states exact percentages, and the figures that appear online contradict each other. Rely on the strength indication on the product and approach it step by step.
Too much nicotine shows up as a nicotine flash: dizziness, nausea, racing heart. If that happens, put the hose down, get some fresh air and drink water; a little sugar helps. Do not smoke dark tobacco on an empty stomach, and take your time between puffs.
How do you pack the bowl for each tobacco type?
Virginia goes into the bowl loose and fluffy; you only level it off. You pack Dark Blend just as loosely or press it down lightly. Truly firm packing is only for a few very strong tobaccos, and that is nothing for starting out.
Bowl packing by tobacco type
Tobacco type
Packing method
Charcoal
Virginia
Loose and fluffy, just level it off
Two to three
Dark Blend
Fluffy or lightly pressed down
Three to light up, then two
Dark Leaf
Like Dark Blend, small bowl
Two, start with little heat
With dark tobacco, heat matters more than the way you pack. If the bowl gets too hot, the smoke turns harsh and the kick gets too strong. Many people smoke Dark Blend in a Phunnel with an HMD because the heat is easy to control there. You can find suitable bowls under Hookah bowls, the packing method step by step under How to pack a hookah bowl properly and everything about heat under HMD, Smokebox and chimney attachment.
Which brands stand for which tobacco type?
For dark tobacco, the scene mainly points to Darkside, Blackburn and Musthave. Musthave blends several Burley varieties for this. Kismet combines Virginia, Orient, Dark Air Cured and Burley in one blend.
Classic Virginia brands are Al Fakher, Adalya, Holster and Hookain. The brand alone is not a reliable indicator, though. Darkside also has a light Virginia line called Starline, and Hookain has its own Dark Blend brand, Blaze. What matters is always the line.

Burley
Dark and coarse: you taste the tobacco as well.

Watch the line
Many brands offer light and dark lines.
Packed loosely
With Virginia you only level it off; nothing gets pressed down.
Which tobacco is right for getting started?
Start with Virginia. It has little nicotine, smokes easily and shows you which aromas you like. Dark Blend is meant for people who already pack bowls confidently and have the heat under control.
If you want to try dark tobacco, first mix a small share of Dark Blend into your Virginia and increase the share from bowl to bowl. How mixing works is explained in the article Mixing hookah tobacco. Opened tins stay fresh for longer if you store them properly.
