A damp pod is often not a defect. Condensation, an overfilled tank or drawing too hard are typical reasons. Only when larger amounts of e-liquid keep escaping despite wiping is the pod or its seal finished.
The location tells you a lot. First look at where it gets damp, and you will usually find the cause within a minute.
| Where it gets damp | Typical cause | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| In the mouthpiece, it gurgles or spits | Flooded coil, condensation in the chimney, drawn too hard | Blow through the pod briefly over a tissue, then draw evenly |
| Under the pod and at the contacts | Condensation from the air channel, pod not fully clicked in | Take the pod off, wipe the underside and contacts dry, reinsert |
| At the filling plug | Tank filled to the brim, plug sits crooked or half in | Fill only to the mark, press the plug in flush all the way round |
| Suddenly everywhere after a flight or heat | Air bubble in the tank expands and pushes e-liquid through the cotton | Transport the pod empty or half full, store it upright |
| Again and again, despite wiping | Crack, worn seal, coil does not sit tightly | Reinsert the coil, otherwise replace the pod |
With every puff, the vapour cools down again in the chimney and in the air channel. Part of it settles as a fine film: condensation. A few drops under the pod or a damp rim on the mouthpiece after a day of vaping are therefore normal, even with a new pod.
You recognise a leak by the amount and the speed. If the fill level visibly drops without you vaping, or the pod is wet again shortly after wiping, e-liquid is running past a seal. Wiping alone no longer helps then.
Get into the habit of wiping the underside of the pod, the mouthpiece and the contacts in the device dry with a lint-free cloth when refilling. The battery section never goes under water.
A typical mistake when refilling is a tank filled to the brim. If you press the plug into a pod filled to the top, it pushes e-liquid into the cotton and on into the air channel. So fill only to the mark and leave a small air bubble, for example with the ELFA Refillable Pod.
After filling a new coil, wait a few minutes until the cotton is saturated. Exactly how long is covered in the article on coils and vaporiser heads.

A pod is built for a calm draw, not for a short, hard suck like on a cigarette. If you draw jerkily, you pull more e-liquid into the cotton than the coil can vaporise. The result: it gurgles, and droplets land in your mouth.
Draw evenly for two to four seconds. With devices that have a fire button, press the button first and then draw, because drawing without firing floods the coil. The difference between a mouth-to-lung draw and a direct lung draw is explained in MTL, RDL or DL.
If it is already gurgling: take the pod off, hold a tissue against the underside and blow once firmly through the mouthpiece. The excess e-liquid comes out at the bottom; afterwards wipe the contacts dry.
E-liquid with a lot of PG is thin and runs through the cotton quickly. That can flood the coil, and then it leaks from the air channel. E-liquid with a very high VG share, on the other hand, wicks too slowly in small MTL pods.
Many pod systems are designed for 50/50, such as Pod Salt Core Double Apple. More in the article PG and VG, e-liquids under Pod Salt and e-liquids.

There is always some air in the pod. When it gets warm or the air pressure drops, this air expands and pushes e-liquid out through the cotton. This is typical after a day in the car, on the dashboard in summer or after a flight.
Pods and coils are wearing parts. There is no fixed lifespan, but these signs are clear:
A new pod is the quickest test: if it is sealed, the fault lay with the old one. If the pod also tastes burnt, the article Pod tastes burnt helps. You will find replacement pods and heads under refillable pod devices and under vaporisers.
Yes. A few drops of condensation under the pod or at the mouthpiece form with every pod. Wipe them off when refilling. Only when the pod is wet again shortly afterwards is it leaking.
Stop drawing, spit it out and rinse your mouth with water. Then blow through the pod over a tissue and wipe the mouthpiece and contacts dry.
The air pressure drops on a plane. The air bubble in the pod expands and pushes e-liquid through the cotton. Fly with an empty or half-full pod and pack it separately in a sealed bag.
Yes. If the pod lies on its side, e-liquid migrates to the air holes. Stand the device upright, also in your bag.
Only with replaceable coils: take the coil out, check the seating and reinsert it. If the tank is cracked or the plug is broken, only a new pod will help.
