Dark tobacco with a number
Tangiers relies on dark base tobaccos: Burley and Dark Leaf, in other words dark-fermented, strong tobacco. Every flavour carries a fixed number shown in the triangle on the pack, such as 96 for Cane Mint or 87 for Kiwi. The shop also stocks Blackberry Lime, Pink Grapefruit, Passion Fruit, Juicy Peach, Erics Mango, Strawberry, Maraschino Cherry, Cream Soda, Green Tea, Lemongrass and 2500 Blueberry.

American setup: packed tight in a phunnel
You smoke Tangiers differently from light tobacco, namely in the American setup. For this you pack the tobacco firmly into a phunnel, a bowl with a single raised hole in the centre, until it sits flush with the rim or 1 to 2 mm below it. It must not touch the foil. Tangiers makes its own phunnel bowls designed for this dense filling. Stir the tobacco in the pack beforehand so the molasses is distributed. If it is very moist, leave it open to air out for a while.
Build up the heat slowly
Poke plenty of holes in the foil and start with little heat: in small bowls two whole or three half coals are enough. Smoked too cool, however, Tangiers gives little flavour, so add heat step by step. Store opened packs airtight in a tin, not in a zip bag.
Frequently asked questions about Tangiers
What do the numbers on Tangiers mean?
Every flavour has a fixed number printed together with its name on the pack, for example 96 for Cane Mint.
Do I pack Tangiers loosely or tightly?
Tightly: flush with the rim or just below it, without touching the foil.
Which bowl suits Tangiers?
A phunnel. Tangiers makes its own phunnel bowls for the dense filling.
Do I need to air out Tangiers?
Only if it is very moist. In that case leave it open before packing, from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the moisture.
