For a good bowl, you sprinkle light tobacco in fluffy up to just below the rim, press Dark Blend down lightly and keep the holes clear. A medium Phunnel holds 12 to 17 grams. On top goes tight foil or an HMD with two to three 26 mm cubes that have glowed through, and after three to five minutes you start smoking.
You need a clean, dry bowl, your tobacco, a tobacco fork with a pricker and either thick aluminium foil or an HMD. A bowl-packing mat keeps molasses and tobacco crumbs off the table.
Stir the tobacco in the tin once. The molasses collects at the bottom, and without stirring the first bowl from the tin tastes weaker than the last. Pick out thick stalks and twigs. If the tobacco is dripping, dab it briefly with kitchen paper. Forks, mats and perforating pins are listed under Bowl-packing accessories.
That depends on the bowl. A shallow Phunnel holds 6 to 8 grams, a medium one 12 to 17, and a deep multi-hole bowl over 20. You press Dark Blend down, so more of it fits in than of Virginia sprinkled in fluffy.
| Bowl | Type | Virginia | Dark Blend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low Lip | Phunnel, shallow | 6 g | 8 g |
| Low Load | Phunnel, shallow | 8 g | 11 to 12 g |
| Lil Lip | Phunnel | 12 g | 16 g |
| Twister | Phunnel | 15 g | 20 g |
| Lesh Lip | Phunnel, deep | 17 g | 24 g |
| Chess Tradi | Multi-hole bowl, small | 8 g | 11 g |
| 5evilla Bowl | Multi-hole bowl | 9 to 11 g | 15 to 16 g |
| Drip Bowl | Multi-hole bowl, deep | 22 to 24 g | 26 to 28 g |
If you smoke alone, a shallow bowl with 8 to 12 grams is enough. For a group, take a bowl from 15 grams. Kitchen scales help with the first few bowls, and after that you have the quantity by feel.
The packing style decides how much air is drawn through the tobacco and how much heat it gets. The scene knows these four packing styles.
| Packing style | How you build | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fluffy | Sprinkle the tobacco in loosely, do not press it down, stop two to three millimetres below the rim | Light, moist tobacco on a Virginia base |
| Nub contact | Fill to just below the rim, the HMD only just touches the tobacco | Virginia under the HMD, if fluffy gives too little smoke |
| Lightly pressed down | Fill in the tobacco and level it gently with the fork, leave the holes clear | Dark Blend and coarsely cut tobacco |
| Overpacking | Heap the tobacco loosely up over the rim, the tight foil presses it down | Dark Blend with foil, not for the first bowl |
If you do not know a flavour yet, build it fluffy. If little smoke comes, build the next bowl denser. If it is harsh, use less tobacco or more distance.
With a Phunnel, the hole sits raised in the middle, and the molasses stays in the bowl. Sprinkle the tobacco as a ring around the Phunnel hole and keep it clear. Fill it loosely to just below the rim of the bowl, not above it. The higher it sits, the more heat it gets and the faster it burns.
The Phunnel is the bowl for moist Virginia and for the HMD. Models are listed under Hookain Phunnel, and the types are explained in the article Phunnel, clay bowl or multi-hole bowl.

With a multi-hole bowl, the holes are in the base. Sprinkle in the tobacco without pressing it into the holes, and at the end prick them clear again with the pricker. You press Dark Blend down lightly here.
Molasses runs down through the holes. A molasses catcher keeps it out of the stem. A multi-hole bowl is usually smoked with foil. The bowls are listed under Hookain multi-hole bowls.

Use thick hookah foil of 40 micrometres such as the Koka Foil. One layer of it is enough. With thin household foil, take four layers as a starting point; the number of layers needed depends on the thickness of the foil. Pull the foil tight over the bowl until it is as smooth as a drumskin. If it sags, it is lying on the tobacco.
Prick many small holes in two to three circles, more on the outside than in the middle. Before the charcoal goes on, draw once on the hose. If the draw is heavy, prick some more.

On the foil you put two cubes of natural charcoal of 26 millimetres that have glowed through at the edge, three on a large bowl. In the middle the tobacco burns quickly. Wait three to five minutes and then draw calmly and for a long time. When dense smoke comes, the bowl is running.
Every 10 to 20 minutes you turn the charcoal and move it along a little. If the smoke gets hot, you take a piece of charcoal off or tilt it onto the rim. After 30 to 45 minutes you add fresh charcoal. With an HMD it is quicker: two pieces of charcoal in, the third on the rim, and with a Phunnel wait two to three minutes. More on this in the article HMD and smokebox. You can get charcoal under hookah charcoal.
This is how you recognise the typical mistakes and put them right.
| What you notice | What causes it | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| The smoke is harsh early on | Tobacco sticks to the foil or HMD, or the charcoal sits in the middle | Charcoal to the edge, less tobacco next time |
| Little smoke | Packed too tightly, holes blocked or too little heat | Prick the holes clear, pack more loosely, add a third piece of charcoal |
| Heavy draw | Tobacco sits in the holes or the foil has too few holes | Prick the holes clear, perforate the foil some more |
| It tastes burnt | The bowl is overheated | Take charcoal off, blow out once through the valve, wait briefly |
| Molasses in the stem | Dripping tobacco in a multi-hole bowl | Dab the tobacco, use a molasses catcher or smoke in a Phunnel |
| No flavour any more after 20 minutes | Too much heat has burnt the tobacco out | One piece of charcoal fewer, leave two to three millimetres of distance |
A bowl lasts 45 to 90 minutes. If hardly any smoke comes despite fresh charcoal, it is finished. Let it cool down before you empty it. How to get it clean is shown in the article Cleaning your hookah properly.
In a shallow Phunnel 6 to 8 grams, in a medium one 12 to 17 grams, in a deep multi-hole bowl over 20 grams. More Dark Blend fits in because you press it down.
You sprinkle light, moist tobacco on a Virginia base in fluffy. You press Dark Blend down lightly.
Two to three millimetres. Only with overpacking with Dark Blend does the tobacco deliberately touch the foil.
Two 26 mm cubes that have glowed through at the edge of the foil, three on a large bowl. Two go in the HMD, and the third sits on the rim to get started.
With foil you wait three to five minutes. With an HMD on the Phunnel, two to three minutes are enough.
The bowl is overheated. Take a piece of charcoal off, blow out once through the valve and use less tobacco for the next bowl.
