The AO Strainer charcoal screen is a stainless steel screen with an outer diameter of around 9 cm. You place it on the stretched aluminium foil, and the charcoal then rests on the screen instead of directly on the foil.
The screen is made of silver stainless steel; the fine mesh in the centre looks a little darker grey. You can find matching chimney attachments as an alternative to foil under HMDs and chimney attachments.
More surface for the charcoal
The screen enlarges the surface for the charcoal and helps you with heat management, especially on smaller bowls. The rim holds back coals that would otherwise slide off the bowl and could leave burn marks on the table.
Made for the aluminium foil setup
The charcoal screen is meant for a bowl with aluminium foil. The foil stays under the screen, and you pierce the holes as usual. Experienced smokers like to use foil and stainless steel screen together to control the heat better.
Handling with grip holes
The screen has grip holes. They let you pick it up with pointed tongs, even when it is hot.
How to use the charcoal screen
- Pack the bowl with tobacco, stretch the aluminium foil tight and pierce it.
- Place the screen in the centre of the foil.
- Put the charcoal on the screen and take your time heating up the bowl.
- To add or remove charcoal, grip the screen at the grip holes with the tongs.

Which bowls is the screen meant for?
Mainly for smaller bowls. With an outer diameter of around 9 cm it covers bowls up to roughly this diameter. If your bowl is wider, the screen no longer sits cleanly on top.
Do I also need aluminium foil?
Yes, the screen does not replace the foil. It rests on it.
How do I clean the screen?
Let it cool down first, then tap off ash and residue and rinse the stainless steel screen with water.

Good as always
Expensive looks different. Went for AO Hookah on purpose because I already know the brand. Handling felt a bit unfamiliar at first.

Gut angekommen
I ben zfriede. Direkt nach dem Auspacken einsatzbereit. Preislich könnte es etwas günstiger sein. Wer damit leben kann, macht nichts falsch.

Solide gefertigt
Als Stammkunde kenne ich die Qualität hier inzwischen. Edelstahl war für mich ein Kaufgrund, und es überzeugt. Einziger Minuspunkt: der Umkarton hatte eine Delle, drin war zum Glück alles in Ordnung. Das hole ich mir jederzeit wieder.
