In a phunnel, a single hole sits on a raised central cone, almost level with the rim. You arrange the tobacco in a ring around the cone. Because the edge of the hole lies above the floor of the reservoir, molasses stays in the bowl and does not flow into the stem. In German, the design is also called a single-hole bowl.

What to look for in a phunnel

  • Fill amount: Figures in grams are only a guide. The volume of the reservoir stays the same, while the weight changes with the cut of the tobacco.
  • Rim: The fit with an HMD or chimney attachment is made at the lip. If it is flat and wide enough, the attachment sits level.
  • Size: The range runs from shallow models with a small reservoir to large versions. The dimensions are given in each product description.
