Menthol in hookah tobacco: a cooling effect without herbs
Menthol gives the tobacco a cooling effect without tasting of herbs itself. It usually appears as an addition next to a fruit or next to mint.

Menthol has its own value in the filter, separate from mint and ice. It describes the cooling effect as a flavour component – clear and cool, but without the green, herbal profile of the mint plant. That is why you will hardly ever find menthol alone; it tends to be the second entry on a variety.
- Mint: clearly the most common partner, herb plus coolness.
- Lemon and grape: fruit with a cooling addition.
- Ice and bubblegum: intensify the coolness or add a sweet-shop sweetness.
Cover: chimney, foil or HMD
Alongside foil and HMD, a chimney bowl is another option: a chimney hood goes on top of the clay bowl, and the chimney effect spreads the heat. Your set-up decides which cover you use, not the flavour. Menthol varieties come from Al Fakher, Blackburn, Darkside, 7Days and Adalya, among others.
