Arcturus - Bowl Busters Edition - Phunnel - Full Glaze

The Arcturus from Hookain is a Phunnel bowl made of glazed stoneware for standard HMDs. Its reservoir is shallow, but deeper than on most Hookain Phunnels, and holds around 8 g of Virginia tobacco or 10 g of dark leaf.

Shallow, deep reservoir with a lip for the HMD

A lip is worked into the reservoir, on which the HMD rests securely. The reservoir is built deeper than on our usual models, so according to Hookain a fill of 8 to 10 g is enough for longer sessions. It suits Virginia just as well as dark leaf.

Phunnel: one hole in the middle, tobacco in a ring

In the middle sits a raised chimney with a single hole, and the tobacco lies around it in the reservoir. That way no molasses runs into the smoke column, and the HMD delivers the heat evenly onto the tobacco from above.

The Arcturus is made in a small workshop near Seville from stoneware and is then glazed. The glaze gives each model its colour. On the Full Glaze the bowl is glazed in beige all over. Molasses and tobacco residue come off the smooth surface easily when rinsed. A silicone bowl grommet is provided for sealing on the hookah.

How to pack the Arcturus

1. Briefly mix the tobacco in its tin so that the molasses is evenly distributed.
2. Sprinkle the tobacco loosely into the reservoir around the chimney and do not press it down. The centre hole stays clear.
3. Fill to just below the lip, so that the HMD does not touch the tobacco.
4. Place the HMD on the lip, put the charcoals on top, get it going for a few minutes and regulate the heat via the ventilation.

How much tobacco fits in the Arcturus?

According to Hookain around 8 g of Virginia tobacco, packed loosely, or 10 g of dark leaf, packed a little more densely. Exactly how much it ends up being also depends on the cut and the moisture.

What is the lip in the reservoir for?

The HMD rests on it and therefore sits firmly, without wobbling.

Do the models differ?

Only in colour and glaze. Shape, reservoir and lip are the same on all models. Because every bowl is made by hand, each piece looks a little different.

How do I clean the bowl?

Only once the bowl on the hookah has cooled down completely do you rinse it out with lukewarm water. Hot ceramic cannot take a cold shock, otherwise the glaze may crack.

Why does molasses leak out on the outside?

Stoneware has fine pores. When the bowl gets hot, molasses soaks in and comes back out on the outside as it cools. The glaze slows this down, but with ceramic it can never be prevented entirely.
