Blood orange differs from the ordinary orange in its red flesh and a flavour with a berry-like, somewhat bitter edge. In tobacco this gives a citrus note that comes across less sweet and darker than classic orange varieties.

Typical combinations

  • Grapefruit is by far the most frequent partner – two bitter citrus fruits that reinforce each other.
  • Mint or menthol add a cooling effect.
  • Apricot and peach appear now and then and bring stone-fruit sweetness to the blend.

Besides perforated foil, a metal screen can also cover the bowl; with both, the charcoal sits directly on the cover, whereas with an HMD it sits in a container with an adjustable lid. Blood orange varieties are made by, among others, Maridan, True Passion, Smoke Island, Blackburn and Savu.
